皆さん、お忙しいところ失礼します。
さて、「忙しい」の「忙」という字はもともとどういう意味か
ご存じでしょうか。
Everyone seems quite busy these days, doesn’t it?
But have you ever wondered what the character “忙”, used in isogashii (“busy”), originally meant?
「忙しい」の「忙」という漢字は形声文字で、
左側の偏は「忄（りっしんべん）＝心」を表す意符、
右側の旁は「亡」で、もともと「逃げる」、「隠れる」、
「なくなる」といった意味を持つ字です。
そこから転じて「死ぬ」「喪失する」といった意味にも用いられるようになりました。
そのため、現代では俗に、忙しいと“心を亡くす”という解釈がされて
います。

The character “忙” is a phono-semantic compound.
The left component, 忄 (risshinben), represents the “heart” or “mind, ” while the right component, 亡, originally carried meanings such as “to flee, ” “to hide, ” or “to disappear. ”
Over time, it also came to signify “to die” or “to lose.”
For this reason, people today often interpret “isogashii” as
“losing one’s heart.”
学術的には、「亡」は本来は音符（発音を示す）であり、
必ずしもそうした『喪失』の意味が直接『忙しい』の語源になったわけ
ではないとされますが、私もここのところ毎日忙しく過ごしております
ので、本日のところはこの辺で失礼いたします。
From a scholarly perspective, however, 亡 in this character primarily serves as a phonetic element, and the sense of “loss” or “death” was not the direct origin of the meaning “isogashii (busy).” That said, since I too have been rather busy myself lately, I shall take my leave here for today.
